Changing Freezing and Boiling Points

Do you know what is inside the strange building shown in this photograph? The building is used to store salt that is spread on the road when weather conditions are below the freezing point of water. What effect will the salt have on icy roads? Why store the salt in a building?

This truck removes snow and spreads salt. How does spreading salt on roads reduce accidents?

A solution of antifreeze is used to fill car radiators. It lowers the freezing point of the water in the radiator of the car. It also raises its boiling point and reduces corrosion. Why are the properties of this solution useful to motorists? Why isn’t salt used instead?

  1. 1. The salt will melt the ice and snow on the ground. You should store it in a building so the salt doesnt melt in the bag.
    2. It will be less icy and slippery so the cars on the roads wont slide into other cars and cause accidents.
    3. They put a liquid in cars because salt would melt in the radiator.

  2. the salt reduces accidents because the salt lowers the freezing poingt, if it is not cold enough outside the ice will turn into water, making it easier to drive.antifreezs can be easier to use for roads that dont have salt on them.

  4. the salt lowers the melting point of the ice and makes the roads less slippery causing less accidents.liquid is used in cars instead of saltbecause salt causes too much erosion.

  5. 1. The salt lowers the melting point of the ice.
    2. The roads will be icy and slippery without the salt, so therefore the salt prevents accidents.
    3. They use a liquid because the salt will cause erosion on the radiator.

  6. Spreading ice on the road reduces the chance of an accident because it lowers the melting point of the ice and it melts faster clearin the roads.

  7. 1)The salt will lower the freezing point of the ice.
2)The spreading of salt will reduce accidents because the salt will melt the ice, and cause the roads to be less slippery.
3)Anti-freeze is chosen to fill the car radiators because it lowers the melting point, and does nt cause as much damage than salt can.

  8. Salt will make the roads clearer by melting the roads.

With clearer roads there is fewer acidents thats why slat is placed.

The solotion is used because it doesnt corode the car unlike salt would.

  9. 1)the salt will make the ice mealt, clearing the raod
2)the mare salt the less ice making less acidents
3)This solution does not corode the cars like normal salt
